Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
The economist commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the promise of the organization, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously led the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released communications revealed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted Summers' choice to resign.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Congressional Action
This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress decided on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the desk of the White House for signature. The President has indicated he plans to approve the legislation, after reversing his view on the matter following objections from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the Congressional committee last week included several well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The emails revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to link Summers to notable global figures.
Individual Statement
After the messages were released with the wider community, Summers expressed he assumed "total ownership for my misguided choice to continue corresponding with the financier".
He further stated that he desired "to rebuild faith and fix relationships with the persons closest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was not connected with the institution.
The former official joined the board of the technology firm, which develops the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
