Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Ace Leaves Egotism at the Door.
A single omission was enough. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the tactical structures and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.
Tuchel desires Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is about using it appropriately. Individual quality counts but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a cost when fame prevails. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of last month’s squad. He observed the national side secure their spot at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach talk about valuing the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has shown him that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the youngster after demonstrating that he is willing to make big calls.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Jude displays the edge. You need a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he reached. Everyone need to help him and create an environment where he can [have] this edge against rivals and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games versus Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? This is another prodigious playmaker requiring love and guidance. He has not played for the national team since spring and has struggled to hit the heights this year but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund recently.
The issue, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at available. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he overcomes a fitness issue. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s game as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it hurts the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clarity helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this idea about him for years. I think it fits his style best.”
He agreed there are occasions when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously something is not right, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing Man City in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or the other. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to get the understanding with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to net in a friendly win against Scotland in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. The connection is missing.
“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. The manager desires Bellingham committed but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an even better one.
