NSW police have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and handed out two traffic infringement notices for alleged negligent driving after a large group of e-bike riders converged on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on a weekday.

The Event: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of approximately 40 people riding e-bikes and motorcycles travelled along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly then turned around and traveled through the city’s CBD and Haymarket.

"This had a risk of people to be injured and killed," remarked a senior police official David Driver on the following day.

Law enforcement indicated they did not chase right away the group due to safety concerns but instead located the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.

Fines Imposed for Influencer

Later in the week, authorities announced they had served the American online personality known as Sur Ronster, 26, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (not involving death or prior injury), with a fine of $562 and penalty points each, connected to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The influencer reportedly has over 3.4 million subscribers on one platform and more than 1.2 million on Instagram.

Influencer's Comments

The online figure gave comments to a major newspaper this week after the incident spread rapidly on digital platforms, saying he regretted giving "bike life" a negative image.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to come here respecting the rules and standards of Sydney. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it did not involve a ride-out, it was just to say hi under the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we reverse, essentially, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."

Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation

The spate of electric bicycles on streets across the country has prompted increasing demands for regulation. A senior government official, Mark Butler, commented that illegal ebikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the harm that are coming into our ERs are truly severe," he stated. "We must ensure we prevent these things entering the country [and] officers are granted the powers to crack down, to take them away, to destroy them, to destroy them."

The state recorded 226 injuries related to electric bikes in the previous year. However, in the first seven months of 2025, that figure surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
